ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Most estimates have the number of diagnosed cases growing a rate of 3 percent every year making it one of the most diagnosed conditions of our time. One recent study estimated that one out of every ten school aged children and one out of every 17 adults struggle with one of the three types of ADHD (inattentive, hyperactive/impulsive, combined).

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a biological condition caused by a chemical neurotransmitter imbalance in the brain producing one or more of the primary symptoms of inattention/focus, impulsivity, and hyperactivity/restlessness.

The ADHD research taking place today is rooted in the premise that people with ADHD have one primary problem: the inability to consistently regulate their attention and behaviors.

What childhood factors could influence ADHD as one grows older?

This type of research is just starting to come to forefront as we try to better understand the how and why of ADHD. It is also a helpful tool in better understanding why ADHD only carries forward into adulthood about half of the time.

According to one study, the four most influential factors in predicting a positive outcome for ADHD children moving forward are: being brought up in an intact household above the poverty level, being raised by parents void of psychiatric problems, a consistent parenting style, and by parents who are both emotionally and physically engaged in their children’s lives.

Studies also show that children raised in a household where aggressive behavior, depression, and substance abuse are commonplace have a much higher risk of having adult ADHD. Additional factors thought to increase the risks include lower intelligence and learning disabilities.

Does poverty play a role?

Another factor seem to be that of socioeconomic status. Research indicates that children and teens brought up in poverty have a much greater chance of not only having ADHD in the first place but carrying it forward into adulthood.

Many of these households consist of parents who are either unemployed or underemployed, don’t have health insurance, and because of their financial struggles are unable or unwilling to schedule regular medical checkups for either their children or themselves.

If one or both parents have the condition the chances are even greater that the child will be brought up in poverty because their parents may be unable to get or retain a job, are at high risk of divorce, and are more likely to be arrested or jailed.

When it comes to poverty and ADHD is it the chicken or the egg? After all we know that 80 percent of untreated ADHD children underachieve in school, with many having behavioral problems to boot. Do these factors lead to parental situations which are inherited thus repeating the cycle? Or is it the influence of socioeconomic status that drives their ADHD symptoms to the forefront of their behavioral tendencies. I will leave these questions for you to decide.

What else? For those struggling with ADHD finding an effective treatment option is an important first step. The most common form of treatment currently are prescription stimulants such as Ritalin, Adderall and Vyvanse. While effective, all stimulant medications come with a number of serious label warnings. The risk of side effects, or perhaps lack of success with stimulants, has prompted many to investigate other options. A couple examples of this are behavior modification therapy and/or natural remedies. Natural remedies for ADHD are a side effect free way to address such problematic symptoms as inattention, distractibility, impulsivity, erratic behavior and hyperactivity and can be used both as a standalone treatment or as a compliment to other nonprescription alternatives.

Being afflicted with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (also known as ADHD or ADD) can be daunting enough for both children and adults alike. All that inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsitivy in a child with ADD can definitely create a nerve-wracking experience for any parent (or parental figure) tasked to look after the child.

But that is not the end of all these challenges. It is commonly known in the medical field that ADD often coexists with a host of other disorders, which often complicate the matter further. Listed here are some of the most common disorders, which oftentimes go hand-in-hand with ADD. Let us take a closer look.

. Anxiety and Depression. These are among the most common disorders, which sometimes accompany ADD. However, once these disorders are successfully diagnosed and treated, the child will have greater chances of coping with the symptoms of ADD.

. Bipolar Disorder. How do we differentiate between ADD and bipolar disorder? This can be a very tough call indeed! ADD and bipolar disorder share a lot of common symptoms. Both disorders render a child with an almost inexhaustible source of energy, a reduced need for sleep and mood swings, among others. So far, only a fine thin line distinguishes between the two.

. Learning Disabilities. ADD is oftentimes accompanied by various forms of learning disabilities in one or more areas of learning. Research indicates that approximately 20 to 30% of all ADD-afflicted children of preschool year also exhibit a marked difficulty in understanding certain sounds or words and may also display a significant difficulty in communicating his or her thoughts verbally.

Other forms of learning disorders may likewise become apparent once these children reach school age. Among the most common disorders, which become evident during this period are reading, writing and spelling disorders (such as dyslexia) along with arithmetic disorders.

. Tourette Syndrome. Tourette syndrome is primarily a neurological disorder characterized by nervous tics and repetitive mannerisms. Some of the most common indications of this syndrome are distinctive facial twitches, eye blinks, grimacing and frequent clearing of the throat, snorting, sniffing or barking out words.

Tourette syndrome cases are very few but those who have it are usually also found to be affected with ADD.

. Oppositional Defiant Disorder. This disorder is most commonly exhibited by an alarming percentage (35 to 50%) of all children afflicted with ADD and is interestingly more common in boys as compared with girls. Those afflicted with this disorder are mostly described as stubborn (and oftentimes exceedingly so), are uncooperative and often display outbursts of temper. Unfortunately, children with this disorder are very much in sync with their rebellious nature!

. Conduct Disorder. If you think that the symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder are grave enough, brace yourselves for this one! Studies show that a significant number of children with ADD (estimated at 20 to 40%) may eventually develop a more serious antisocial behavior known as conduct disorder.

Children and teens with this disorder are more prone to getting into trouble at school, with the police and with any other authority figures. There is a very high tendency for children with this disorder to lie and cheat compulsively and get into fights. As such, it can be said that breaking the rules are their ultimate objectives. These children and teens are also more prone to experiment with drugs and thus, drug abuse is by no means a remote possibility for those with this disorder.

New meds for ADHD are always being developed. One of the newer drugs is in patch form. The patch is water resistant, and can be used by people who cannot swallow a pill, such as children. It is also convenient for parents who need an extended release form for the kids at school. With the patch the school would not have to administer any medications.

Methylphenidate (amphetamine), a controlled substance is the medication used for the patch. This new ADHD medication is the same stimulant that is used in Ritalin, Concerta and Focalin. The drug is time released and delivered more slowly than pills. The medication in the patch passes through the skin and into the bloodstream instead of the digestive system. The patch does have the same side effects such as no appetite, trouble falling asleep, headaches, stomachache and tics, skin irritation or rash where the patch is placed on the body.

Some drugs marketed for other causes are trying to be passed off as a new drug for ADHD when in reality they have been on the market for years and for treating a completely different condition. The question is “Do we really need another new ADHD medication”? Especially since the thought now among ADHD experts is that ADHD does not get better as the patient gets older. ADHD in adults is growing and they experience a higher rate of unemployment, divorce, drug abuse.

With all the controversy relating to new meds for ADHD why not try something that has been just as effective and without all the problems associated with pharmacy medications. Why are we so quick to jump on the prescription route? Alternatives medicines might be your answer if you are looking for something else besides a prescription drug that can cause dependency.

Are you suffering from adult asthma symptoms? Wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing and other lesser-known symptoms can certainly take their toll and have significant effects on daily life. Do you think you have asthma? It’s important to learn the signs and symptoms of an asthma attack, and to get it evaluated and under control as quickly as possible with minimal medical intervention. Asthma symptoms can vary greatly in severity from an occasional mild episode of shortness of breath to wheezing that persists despite the use of prescribed medications. The classic symptoms of an asthma attack include rapid breathing, wheezing on exhalation, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness or pain. It can be very scary for the person having the attack, because to them it feels like they’re drowning, unable to catch a deep breath because it won’t go in.

Adult asthma symptoms usually progress over a period of hours or days, and occasionally the airways become more seriously inflamed or obstructed. At this point, it’s wise to schedule a visit to the asthma specialist for lung function tests and prescribed antibiotics and corticosteroids to get the excessive mucous and inflammation under control. A common cold can become a full blown respiratory infection in an asthmatic, which is why it’s important to recognize symptoms early and get treatment started right away. Understanding the underlying causes of allergies and allergy-related asthma is another important intervention that has been proven to reduce the number and severity of asthma attacks in a significant number of patients. Allergies are a common underlying factor, and once the allergies are addressed, the frequency of asthma attacks decreases as well.

Long-term relief medications for adult asthma sufferers are widely available, and usually consist of an inhaled corticosteroid taken twice daily and a rescue inhaler for sudden symptoms. Lots of information for treatment of adult asthma symptoms is available from local medical professionals including asthma and immunology specialists, so don’t hesitate to seek a professional evaluation and consultation. Over-the-counter medications are not recommended for the long term treatment of chronic asthma, and can have dangerous consequences for someone in a life threatening situation. With proper treatment, asthmatics take brisk walks, and take up running and other vigorous aerobic activity without asthma symptoms. Do you homework and learn more about asthma symptoms, treatment and underlying causes online at a number of sites dedicated to keeping asthma under control and to you living a healthy symptom-free life.

For allergy sufferers, finding the right allergy relief can be downright frustrating and, at times, feel quite hopeless. When medication after medication proves unsuccessful, relief can seem like a far-off dream. However, being persistent, monitoring triggers, and keeping open lines of communication with a doctor may prove to be the best possible ways to get one step closer to finding a solution.

Depending on the type of allergy, many options are available for relief. Obviously, the most important treatment is to avoid the irritant as much as possible or to try and completely eliminate any type of contact with the allergen. In order to find the specific irritant, testing may take place to see what specific allergen is causing the allergy symptoms. Once the specific trigger is defined, a plan can be discussed with a doctor or allergist.

For individuals who suffer from pet dander, mold, dust, and mildew allergies, keeping the home as clean as possible can help to achieve some allergy relief. Choosing not to have an animal in the home if there is a pet allergy would eliminate this problem completely. But if the animal must remain in the home, frequent washing of the animal to eliminate excess pet dander can prove to be helpful in minimizing symptoms.

Frequent dusting, vacuuming, and cleaning of bathrooms and kitchens with a bleach and water solution can help keep dust mites and molds at bay. Protecting mattresses and pillows with covers and pads minimizes the possibility of dust mites. And weekly washing of all bedding, including blankets, will also provide allergy relief by reducing allergens within the air. Also, obtaining an air humidifier and an air filtration system can reduce mold spore production within the air.

Certain over-the-counter medications also prove helpful for sufferers of seasonal allergies – those that are induced by the release of pollens into the air – as well as any other type of mild allergy. Nasal decongestants or certain antihistamines such as psuedoephedrine, phenyleprhrine, or oxymetorlzaone can be used alone or in conjunction with each other to achieve relief through the elimination of such symptoms as itchy and watery eyes, stuff and runny nose, and chronic sneezing.

For sufferers of more severe allergies, prescription allergy relief may be found in long term antihistamine use or in nasal corticosteroids. Corticosteroids, taken at low dosages, have proven very successful in eliminating ongoing chest congestion. Immunotherapy is also utilized in severe allergy cases and involves injections of the specific allergen over time in order to build the body’s immunity and create tolerance to that allergen in the future.

If all of the treatments have proven unsuccessful, individuals should remain persistent and discuss other alternatives with their doctor to find the relief they need. Monitoring the triggers and tracking any changes will help the doctor understand the individual’s specific allergy. New treatments are being discovered on a daily basis and keeping up-to-date with the newest developments could lead to finding the right allergy relief for you.

Allergy means exaggerated reaction by our immune system and responses to bodily contact with certain foreign substance. What allergies do eliminate the item from your body when possible in one way or the other to protect you? However, some allergy reaction can be very strong and actually cause you much pain, damage and even be fatal sometimes.

Here is how you can recognize an allergic reaction, treat it and learn to prevent them in the future. Our immune system is responsible for protecting our bodies from foreign substance and what has the possibility to cause possible damage. Allergies occur when the immune system protects our body from one such occurrence by not recognizing the compound such as, sneezing when you inhale pollen or dust, diarrhea when you drink milk.

Identify Your Body Type

One is not born with allergic reaction but develops them along the way; while some may experience it when they are born with milk some may develop them even in their adulthood. It is very important to learn about your own body and listen to its reactions carefully, as each one of us is unique in his or own way and therefore will react to certain things differently.

Keeping track of what you eat and do as well as any unusual reaction that may occur during the day or immediately after you have consumed a product may help you trace an allergy when it happens and treat it.

Allergic Reaction Symptoms

To get any allergy treatment you need to recognize the symptoms and here are some of the most common types, Skin rashes that are usually of red color and itch, nausea, vomiting, sneezing, wheezing, watery eyes, unclear vision, not able to focus. Serious cases you will have difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat to the point where one can get into shock if not treated quickly.

Importance of Treatment

Several allergy reactions require treatment right away such as for shell fish allergies or nuts where one’s breathing pipes lines will close and literally you will be out of oxygen. You can save your or someone else’s life by getting immediate allergy treatment as the symptom occurs or sometimes people carry on them drugs and shots that will provide the required allergy treatment.

Tips

If you know your allergies always carry the necessary allergy treatment along if you may need it when away from home like at office and while driving and if possible place it in a box with the necessary instructions. If you have babies in the house make a first aid box in the house where you can place their allergy treatment clearly marked so everyone can access and use if required.

Atopic is derived from the word “atopy” which describes a group who have a history of asthma, eczema, hay fever and dry skin. Thus atopic dermatitis is a type of eczema. It is a skin disease which is red and inflammatory. There is no known medical cure therefore it is chronically relapsing. This means although with proper medication the atopic dermatitis may be cured or in medical term in remission it can one day come back. However this skin disease is not contagious but scientists believe it to be hereditary.

A patient with atopic dermatitis normally reacts rather badly to allergens such as food and environmental irritants. Their skin becomes red in color, dry, flaky and very itchy. Due to the scratching of the skin it bleeds and this become easily infected with bacteria. In severe cases the condition can cover the whole body. Atopic dermatitis is a very common skin disease affecting about 20% of children and about 2% adults in United States of America. However very little is understood about the underlying causes of this skin disease. Since there is no cure, treatment is mainly the discovery of triggers of the allergic reactions and trying to avoid them.

Once the triggers have been found topical treatments can be used. These topical treatments merely focus on relieving both the dryness and the inflammation of the affected skin. To alleviate the dryness a hypoallergenic moisturizer need to be regularly used on the affected areas of the skin. The use of moisturizers is most effective when applied immediately after taking a bath.

Virgin coconut oil can also be used in combating the dryness of the affected skin. This virgin coconut oil contains lauric acid which is known for its antiviral and antibacterial properties. Lauric acid which is also found in mother’s milk is the most essential fatty acid for the building of an immune system in the body.

The virgin coconut oil help to restore damaged skin by penetrating into the cell structures of the connective tissues of your skin. It is an excellent natural treatment for eczema as well as other skin disorders. It also helps to prevent the skin from developing liver spots by destroying free radical formation.

The right windshield can add extra safety to your vehicle and also streamline the look of it.

For the last 70 years, laminated glass has been the preferred choice in most vehicles. Invented at the turn of the last century, laminated glass is actually several layers. It has two or more layers of glass surrounding an inner plastic or resin layer which serves as a binding interlayer. This interlayer keeps the glass from breaking into smaller, more dangerous pieces in the event of an accident. Instead, the glass breaks into the common “spider web” pattern seen in almost every crash. There is also tempered glass. Tempered safety glass is a single piece of glass that has been heated then cooled quickly to harden it. Tempering glass strengthens the glass to about 5-10 times the original strength. This allows it to break into small, pebble like pieces without sharp edges. Tempered glass is generally used in side windows on vehicles to allow for emergency escape.

Since it doesn’t allow the glass to completely shatter, laminated glass is ideal for vehicles of all shapes and sizes. It has also benefited the consumer by being largely repairable; chips and cracks can be easily repaired with resin. While its safety features are innumerable, it actually has more features that make it the number one choice for auto glass manufacturers and auto glass repair services.

Laminated glass is much more difficult to shatter than glass that has been tempered. That means that theft is greatly reduced simply because of the amount of time that it would take for the thief to effectively shatter it. Also, the extra layer in laminated glass is perfect to reduce exterior noise. It makes the car more comfortable without blocking out emergency sounds such as ambulance and police sirens. Most laminated glass comes with the options for UV protection and temperature control. This helps to protect you and your passengers from UV rays and keeps your car at a more comfortable temperature during the warmer months.

Tempered glass, while it has its advantages, should never be used in windshields. It simply is too easy to shatter. And while this can be beneficial in side windows for safety reasons, it can be extremely hazardous in a windshield. A rock that would only chip laminated glass could potentially shatter tempered glass; which could be incredibly dangerous if you’re traveling at high speed on the freeway.

It’s important to keep your glass, whatever the material, in good condition. Letting chips on a windshield develop into long cracks can present safety hazards as well as affect the functionality of your windshield. Auto glass repair services are available to repair your auto glass with a minimal cost to you. Depending on the circumstance, the repair may even be covered by your insurance company.

Speak to your insurance agent or a certified auto glass repair technician today to discuss your options and how much it would cost. Older vehicles need to be inspected to make sure that they have the correct type of safety glass installed.

Installing the correct kind of glass in your vehicle is extremely important. Different kinds of glass, as previously discussed, have different uses and installing the wrong kind of glass for any window in your vehicle can present significant safety hazards. Make sure that you have a certified auto glass technician, that is knowledgeable in a variety of auto glass services, help you choose the right material, style, thickness and size auto glass to ensure the protection of you and your family.

If you are feeling pain in your back, leg and calf, the chances are you are suffering with sciatica. Before I go any further however, it is important I stress that sciatica is a descriptive term and not a diagnostic one. Anyone who is feeling pain anywhere from there back, through their buttock and down the back of their leg could be said to be suffering with sciatica.

However, the most important thing to establish is not that you are suffering with sciatica, but rather what is causing your sciatica. Two or three different people could be presenting with the same signs & symptoms, yet each of their causes may be different.

The sciatic nerve is formed from the nerve roots L4-S3 which leave the lower part of the back. It then passes through the buttock region, down the back of the leg and then, via its branches, to the tips of the toes. If the sciatic nerve is being aggravated, either from its origin in the lower back or as it passes through the buttock and down the back of the leg, it has the potential to cause pain (as well as other signs & symptoms such as pins & needles, numbness and weakness).

The causes of sciatica can be numerous as I mentioned above. Nevertheless, the main culprits tend to be:

1) A prolapsed disc: A prolapsed disc will tend to pinch on the nerve roots which form the sciatic nerve as they leave the spine itself. If this ‘pinching’ begins to aggravate and inflame the nerve, pain will result. This pain could be felt anywhere from the low back itself, down your leg to the tips of your toes.

2) Facet Joint Irritation: As the nerve roots leave the spine, they can also be pinched or aggravated by the facet joints of the lower back. If a facet joint in the lower back is aggravating the nerve roots, once again pain may be felt anywhere from the low back itself, down your leg to the tips of your toes.

NB. It is important I note here that although a prolapsed disc and facet joint irritation may aggravate the same nerve roots which form the sciatica nerve, as well as produce very similar (in some cases identical) signs and symptoms, the treatment given would almost be opposite to each other. Therefore it is imperative the correct diagnosis is obtained.

3) Muscle Imbalance: This is where tight and/or weak muscles allow too much stress to be placed across the sciatica nerve. A more specific stretching and strengthening exercise programme would need to be prescribed for this problem. If your pain is starting in the buttock region, there is a fair chance muscle imbalance is the main cause. A tight piriformis muscle is a very common cause of sciatica which starts in the buttock region.

The good news is that sciatica can nearly always be treated conservatively with an appropriate advice and exercise programme, whichever of the above 3 may be causing your pain. If treated correctly sciatica can be treated and resolved 100% without any need for surgery. It is just knowing what to do and when to do it which is the critical factor.

Upper back pain can be just as painful and difficult to tolerate and live

with as lower back pain. It is essential that there are exercises available

for people with upper back discomfort. Following a simple and easy to understand

exercise regimen for upper back pain can be a productive way to reduce your discomfort.

Proper exercises can be obtained from books, video, medical

professionals, and online sources. However, when starting out with an exercise program to help reduce the pain it could be helpful to have a professional like a

physical therapist or trainer to go through the exercises with you first.

The professional may be able to offer some simple and easy tips for exercises

that are specific to your condition or illness. Then once the

exercises are learned you can continue the process at home and not

necessarily always have to return to the medical professional’s office.

Some upper back pain relief exercises that are quite easy to follow involve

some very simple stretching motions. The exercises can become more intense

and offer more of a stretch when they include the arms and shoulders.

The first exercise is pulling your shoulder blades back, moving them towards

each other, and then stretching your arms out to the side to open the rib

cage. The upper back should be pushed forward when this is done and that

will alleviate some of the tension which could be causing pain. The muscles

in the front and the back of the spine are stretched and then this does a

few things. It increases circulation, strengthens muscles, and relaxes the

muscles.

The second set of exercises are following the same

as the first exercise but stretching the arms above the head. This allows a

deeper stretch and therefore may provide more relief. The more the upper

back is flatted, the more intense the stretch, and then the more relief that

can be obtained.

The upper back is typically where people carry their stress. This stress

caused pain can be alleviated often by following upper back pain relief

exercises. It is always a positive thing when medications and intense

expensive therapies are not needed. Many people who get upper

back pain will practice yoga in order to not only relieve the pain, but it’s also

productive in preventing upper back pain from happening again.

This is especially true when the pain is caused by stress. The meditative

elements of yoga make for a peaceful and calm atmosphere. Yoga gyms

and places of practice can be found in your local directory. The professionals

there can offer advice on back pain reduction as well.
